1. Choose where the copy belongs
Install DiskPond on Windows 10 or 11 x64. Choose a storage destination that you can access: an external drive, a mounted network drive, or a supported storage provider.
A copy on the same physical drive won’t protect against that drive failing. For important files, keep an independent copy on another device and a copy off-site.
2. Create an encrypted vault
Choose Create a new vault, select the storage type and enter its connection details. Give the vault a name and choose an encryption password.
Store the password somewhere recoverable. You need it to reconnect to the vault; DiskPond cannot reset it to decrypt your backups. If you already have a compatible vault, use Connect an existing vault instead.
3. Add files and run a backup
Add a file or folder, then start a backup. Wait for its terminal result and review any reported issues. A connected vault or a running task is not proof that your files have been backed up.
Once the first backup completes, choose a schedule and retention settings that match how often your files change. Scheduled work requires DiskPond to be open or running in the tray, with the destination available.
4. Try a restore
Open the folder’s backup history, select a backup and browse its contents. Restore a test file into a new, empty folder and open it to check the result.
Repeat a small restore check occasionally, especially after changing storage or moving to another computer.
